Whether teaching guitar lessons, leading monthly open mic nights, or heading quarterly concerts, John Tosco has never strayed far from the music he’s loved since witnessing The Beatles on “The Ed Sullivan Show” at age 5. “My earliest memory is having a cardboard guitar and my neighbor and I would play along and stand in front a mirror,” he recalls. Today he’s a fixture on the Charlotte music scene.
Love for music: After playing professionally in Colorado, Tosco longed for similar connections in Charlotte so he began hosting jams at his house. The parties grew so popular they were moved to larger venues and eventually Tosco Music Parties became more formal with a pre-announced lineup and set times like a showcase where the audiences could get a taste for a variety of acts. The next one is Sept. 8 at Halton Theater.
Teaching music: Tosco started his own music school, Tosco Music Studios, a decade ago. He teaches mandolin, guitar, piano and ukulele and encourages students to take the stage at monthly open mics at The Evening Muse. The next one is Aug. 8.
Beatlemania: The most popular event Tosco, 53, produces is the annual Beatles Tribute Night, a four hour concert in June that features everything from all-star sing-alongs to soul, jazz, classical, rock, folk, and gospel covers from the Fab Four’s vast catalog.
