Scholarships given to campers

Twenty-five students recently won scholarships to attend Camp Lutheridge, a Lutheran-supported camp with programs for youths and adults. Ten of those scholarships were funded by a grant to Lutheridge from the Charlotte Observer’s Summer Camp Fund.

McClintock Middle School students selected were 2011-2012 eighth-graders Raphael Bikai, C.J. Graham, Keymale Jackson, Brandon Perez, Maurice Phillips and Xavier Woody; seventh-graders Ajia Blakeney, Breanna Davis, Rashaun Ford, Kierra Freeman, Shekainia Gaither, Raekwon Gales, Davion Hardy, Caleb Mingo, Tyreik Morrison, Rose Rivera, C.J. Rucker, Tevin Sinkler, Abrianna Smith and Caleb Stowe; and sixth-graders Wesley Dunbar and Jamia Gales. High school freshmen Sylvester Brooks, Keria Goss and Lalena Vazquez were also chosen.

Students participated in three programs: Surf ‘N’ Turf, which included rafting the Nolichucky River and backpacking the Appalachian Trail; Rock ‘N’ Raft, featuring rope-climbing in Linville Gorge and rafting on the Nolichucky; and Explorers, in which each cabin group gets to choose some activities and everyone enjoys crafts, games and the low ropes course.
