Fire engulfs south Mecklenburg home

By Meghan Cooke and April Bethea

Charlotte fire investigators are still trying to determine what caused a fire that left “significant damage” to a home in southern Mecklenburg.

Dispatchers received the first of several 911 calls around 9:15 p.m., said Charlotte Fire Capt. Rob Brisley. The callers were reporting a blaze at a large house in the 7000 block of The Greens, located in a neighborhood off Rea Road and not far from Interstate 485.

When firefighters arrived, flames had engulfed the roof area of the home. Soon, the roof collapsed, temporarily forcing firefighters to fight the blaze from outside the home, Brisley said.

By around 9:45 p.m., firefighters had controlled the bulk of the fire.

Brisley said Friday that firefighters remained at the scene overnight to take care of hot spots, assist the family and help determine the cause of the fire.
