One person was killed in a wreck early Friday in north Charlotte, a collision that has blocked traffic at a busy intersection.

The wreck was reported around 7:06 a.m. Friday at the intersection of Sugar Creek Road and North Tryon Street. At least one person was trapped in a vehicle.

One person was killed in the wreck, and another is being treated for what are described as non-life threatening injuries, according to a Medic spokeswoman.

The name of the victim, described as a woman, has not yet been released. Early reports are that the victim lost control of the vehicle while traveling at a high speed, then hit a phone pole and at least two other vehicles.

The wreck has closed the intersection of Tryon and Sugar Creek. Drivers coming from the University City area toward uptown can use the Hwy. 29/49 connector to Interstate 85. Those travelling on Sugar Creek can use The Plaza or Craighead Road as alternate routes.

Earlier Friday, crews were working to remove tree limbs and fallen power lines on Tremont Road in Dilworth. A portion of the road was blocked near Euclid Avenue for more than an hour, but the road has since reopened.

There appear to be no other major problems on area roads and interstates. Photographer Davie Hinshaw and WCNC-TV contributed
