Former President Jimmy Carter won’t be coming to Charlotte but he’ll speak to Democratic convention delegates by video on the event’s first night.
Officials said this morning that Carter will speak in prime time on Tuesday night, Sept. 4.
“Rosalynn and I regret that we will be unable to be at the Democratic Convention this year in Charlotte,” Carter, 87, said in a statement. “However, we remain steadfast in our support for President Obama and the progress he will make in the next four years.”
Carter will speak on the same night that keynoter Julian Castro, the mayor of San Antonio, and First Lady Michelle Obama are scheduled to speak.
“President Carter is one of the greatest humanitarian leaders of our time and a champion of democracy around the globe,” convention chair Antonio Villaraigosa, the mayor of Los Angeles, said in a statement.
He called Carter “a lifelong champion of human rights and investments in education and energy to spur economic development.”
