Some Charlotte-area students back in school

Summer break is over for some Charlotte-area students, with a few school systems in the region already back in session.

The Hickory, Newton-Conover and Catawba County school systems kicked off the 2012-13 school year on Tuesday. And students in Caldwell County will be back in class on Monday.

The districts are among 32 in the state that received permission to start the school year early. State law generally requires school districts to start no sooner than Aug. 25 and end by June 10. According to the state, the districts requested the waiver because weather caused students to miss more than 8 school days in four of the past ten years.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is set to begin the school year on Aug. 27, though students at the Cato Middle College High are already in class.
