Rowan prosecutors to seek death penalty in grandmother’s killing

Observer staff reports

Rowan County prosecutors will pursue the death penalty against a man accused of beating his ex-girlfriend to death with a baseball bat, reports the Salisbury Post.

Joan Marie Know Lark was assaulted at her East Spencer home in January, according to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office. Her grandchildren, who had been sleeping upstairs, discovered their 49-year-old grandmother dead on the floor of a downstairs bedroom.

Investigators soon arrested 54-year-old Gary Cureton, charging him with murder, burglary and armed robbery. Authorities said he was Lark’s ex-boyfriend.

Cureton has previously been convicted of communicating threats and assault on a female, records show.

He remains in Rowan County jail without bond.
