Heavy congestion on Independence after wreck

Drivers along Independence Boulevard toward uptown Charlotte are running into heavy congestion after a wreck earlier Friday.

The wreck, which was reported on inbound Independence near Briar Creek Road, temporarily closed some lanes of the interstate. All lanes reopened after 8 a.m., but traffic is still moving slowly. Authorities say the congestion could last through 9 a.m.

Drivers can use Monroe Road or Central Avenue as alternate routes.

At 8:20 a.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg police were on the scene of four other wrecks, including a collision with reported injuries on W.T. Harris Boulevard near Interstate 77 in north Charlotte.
