I-85 near Salisbury shut down after wreck

A portion of Interstate 85 is closed Friday afternoon after a multi-vehicle crash near Salisbury.

The wreck happened around 1:30 p.m. near mile marker 55 at an overpass when a van traveling south crossed over the median and into oncoming traffic and hit a tractor-trailer head on in the northbound lanes.

Two people in the white van were ejected from the vehicle, and a helicopter arrived on the highway to take the victims to a nearby hospital.

The southbound lanes re-opened around 2:15 p.m., but all northbound lanes are closed.

The van hit a green-colored car carrier 18-wheeler, and it's unclear if the driver of that vehicle was hurt.

Drivers are exiting at Highway 29 to avoid the heavy delays.
