Changes to the Observer’s Sweet 16 ranking system

Changes to the Observer’s Sweet 16 ranking system

This season, the Observer is making a few changes to how it determines whether schools are eligible for inclusion into the Sweet 16.

Now, schools must belong to a recognized state association and field multiple sports teams. They cannot allow student-athletes to repeat a grade and maintain eligiblity for athletics after that student enters ninth grade. This is commonly referred to as “re-classing.” To be eligible for inclusion, a schools’ student-athletes will have eight consecutive semesters of eligibility after starting ninth grade.

The area’s public schools already subscribe to these rules, as they are required for inclusion in the N.C. High School Athletic Association. The Observer has asked all of the other schools in its coverage area to submit signed forms acknowledging they meet these requirements.

A complete list of eligible schools is available at charlotteobserver.com/preps.
