Vigils planned to remember slain 13-year-old

Friends and family of Khalil Cousart are planning vigils this week to remember the slain 13-year-old.

Some planned to meet Wednesday evening at the intersection of Tuckaseegee Road and Parkway Avenue, where Khalil was fatally shot early Tuesday.

Damien Wright, Khalil’s 16-year-old friend, was charged with murder and remains in Mecklenburg jail. Police have not said what led up to the gunshots, but some of Khalil’s relatives have said they believe the shooting was accidental.

On Wednesday, several classmates, relatives and friends spread plans of a vigil through Twitter, where they wrote that they wanted to “show respect” for Khalil, a rising eighth-grader at Ashley Park school in west Charlotte.

Judy Williams said her group, Mothers of Murdered Offspring, will host a march followed by a candlelight vigil Friday evening near the spot where Khalil was shot.
