Wreck dumps musical instruments on I-485

A dump truck carrying old musical instruments and other trash overturned on Interstate 485, adding a sour note to midday traffic Friday in southwest Charlotte.

The truck flipped shortly before noon on the inner loop of I-485, near the Steele Creek Road interchange. Debris flew across three of the four lanes, bringing traffic to a near-standstill for miles.

The debris included metal objects but also a number of musical instruments that apparently were headed for the scrap heap.

The N.C. Highway Patrol was able to reopen two lanes by 1 p.m., and the last of the debris was cleared around 2:30 p.m. Troopers said there were no serious injuries.

Traffic problems in the area were worsened by a wreck involving a truck and a fuel spill on South Tryon Street near I-485.
