Charlotte Checkers to start 2012-13 AHL season on road

Jack Horan
Correspondent

Hockey-hungry fans must wait until early November to see the Charlotte Checkers in action at Time Warner Cable Arena as the Checkers will play nine straight games on the road at the beginning of the 2012-2013 season.

While the Checkers open Oct. 13 at Houston, their first home game will be Nov. 4 against Chicago. They’ll take on the Wolves again Nov. 6 followed by two home games against Peoria Nov. 8-9. The last regular season game is April 20 at Peoria.

The Checkers will spend most of late November and December playing 10 straight home games against Oklahoma City, Rockford, Lake Erie, Milwaukee and Houston.

The American Hockey League over the summer moved the Checkers from the Midwest to the South Division of the Western Conference, meaning Charlotte will face division rivals Houston, Oklahoma City, San Antonio and Texas eight times.

The Checkers will meet league champion Norfolk eight times, including a Jan. 6 game at PNC Arena in Raleigh, home of the Carolina Hurricanes.

The schedule includes two day-night doubleheaders with the Charlotte Bobcats on Dec. 15 and Jan. 26 at Time Warner Cable Arena, with the Checkers playing at noon both days.
