Two controversial billboards dot the Charlotte skyline just in time for the Democratic National Convention. The two signs appear to attack the Christian and Mormon religions.
One sign, which sits off the Brookshire Freeway, reads "Mormonism: Magic Underwear, Baptizes Dead People, Big Money Big Bigotry."
The other, off Wilkinson Boulevard, reads "Christianity: Sadistic God: useless Savior, 30,000+ versions of "Truth" promotes hate, calls it "Love.""
Each billboard also said to "Join American Atheists" -- the group that rented the space for the signs.
A statement from the group's president, David Silverman, said that because of the DNC coming to Charlotte he wanted to let Americans know about his group's displeasure about both candidates making religion a part of their campaigns.
The election of our leaders in the United States is one of the most important decisions that we as citizens make. Allowing our judgment to be clouded by sheer silliness is unacceptable. No religious test shall ever be required as a qualification for those desiring public office. How can we disregard our governing principles so blatantly, Silverman asked.
Both billboards are owned by Adams Outdoor Advertising. In a statement they said, "The upcoming Democratic National Convention will bring to Charlotte people of varying viewpoints and a diversity of opinion. The ability to express one's opinion is a right and a privilege at the core of a democratic society."
