1-year-old hospitalized, mom charged

A 1-year-old boy left alone in a bathroom had to be hospitalized Monday evening, and police said they have charged the youth’s mother with child neglect.

Jessenia Gissel Matute, 20, was charged in the case, which police said is being investigated by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police and the Department of Social Services. Her son was in critical condition at Presbyterian Hospital, according to police.

Investigators said they were called about 5:15 p.m. Monday to a home in the 5300 block of Firelight Lane, in a condominium community off Albemarle Road near Sharon Amity Road. Officers said they arrived to find the 1-year-old conscious but not responsive, and receiving treatment from Medic.

The child’s mother told police she left the boy unattended in the bathroom and returned to find him unresponsive, according to investigators.

Observer news partner WCNC-TV reports that Matute was giving the boy a bath and went into the kitchen for a few minutes to cook. When she returned, she found the child in distress.

Matute then called 911 and began performing CPR, police said.

Police said the child is expected to survive.

WCNC-TV contributed.
