Abused puppy found in Charlotte park; reward offered

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police want to know who abused a puppy and left her to wander the streets.

Leeloo, as her new owner David Miller has named her, is a six-month-old pit bull mix. Miller found her wandering Veterans Park late Monday. An untreated skin infection means she is hairless, covered in sores, and her paws are swollen.

“This is the worst case I’ve seen,” said NoDa Animal Hospital veterinarian Dr. Oona Gayle. “It’s really severe because it affects her entire body – inside her ears, her feet are swollen. Someone took her ear, took scissors and cut straight off.”

Gayle said that is common when dogs are used to fight.

“She is small, could have been bait to train the bigger dogs,” she said.

Gayle said Leeloo will heal – even grow hair back now that she’s in good hands.

“She still plays, still interacts, still loving. She just wants a chance to get some love,” Gayle said.

Miller has decided to keep Leeloo and has big plans to spoil her.

Project Halo, a local animal rescue group, is paying the veterinarian bills and is offering a cash reward for anyone with information about who abused and abandoned the puppy.
