Sunday: Carolina Panthers at N.Y. Jets

PRESEASON RECORDS: Panthers 1-1; Jets 0-2.

INJURIES: Panthers – OUT: WR Steve Smith (foot), LB Jon Beason (hamstring), DT Andre Neblett (blood pressure), LB Kenny Onatolu (hamstring) and CB Brandon Hogan (knee).

Jets – OUT: WR Chaz Schilens (ankle); QUESTIONABLE: S Yeremiah Bell (knee) and DT Mike DeVito (calf).

WHAT TO LOOK FOR ...

When the Panthers have the ball:

Cam Newton and the rest of the starters will see their most extensive preseason action, with Ron Rivera saying he’d like the first team to play into the third quarter. Newton was sharp last week against the Dolphins, but will be without his favorite target as Steve Smith recovers from an infected foot. Brandon LaFell and Louis Murphy will be challenged to get open against an experienced Jets secondary. The Panthers will look to establish the running game if the downfield throws aren’t there.

When the Jets have the ball:

The Panthers showed a good pass rush against Miami, sacking rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill three times and pressuring him on a couple other throws. This could be a good week for defensive end Greg Hardy to get going. He’ll line up against right tackle Austin Howard, who takes over after Wayne Hunter was benched and ex-Panther Jeff Otah couldn’t pass his physical. Hardy had two offsides penalties vs. the Dolphins and did not record a tackle.

When the Panthers’ special teams are on the field:

Rivera has wanted to get kickers Olindo Mare and Justin Medlock into pressure situations. This might be as close as it gets in the preseason. Mare and Medlock, seemingly deadlocked through two exhibitions, will have to deal with the notorious Jets fans, but likely will avoid the swirling Meadowlands winds that befuddle kickers late in the season.
