A Caldwell County man remains in jail Tuesday accused of choking his infant daughter. Authorities said the three-month-old girl also had numerous bite marks on her body.
Justin Paige Shoemake, 20, of Hudson, is charged with felony child abuse, assault on a child under 12 and misdemeanor child abuse. He was being held under a $200,000 bond in the Caldwell County Detention Center.
Authorities said someone called the sheriff’s office last Friday to report the infant was being assaulted by father. The man had allegedly choked the infant, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
Investigators also said visible bite marks were found on the infant’s lip, nose, ear and other body parts.
The baby was taken to the hospital where officials said she had “numerous serious injuries resulting from extensive physical abuse,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
The girl is now in the custody of the department of social services.
“We will not tolerate the abuse of our children in this county,” said Caldwell Sheriff Alan Jones. “The investigators are working hard to build the strongest case possible so we can reach a successful prosecution.”
Authorities said more charges could be filed in the case.
