Your guide to the holiday weekend

Here’s some of what’s going on in the Myrtle Beach area Labor Day weekend...

Beach, Boogie & BBQ Festival

The outdoor event runs Aug. 31-Sept. 2 at Myrtle Beach’s Grand Park, on Farrow Parkway, across from The Market Common. Free-admission fundraiser offers entertainment, activities and food. Bring your chairs and blankets (but no coolers) for concerts.

The venerable beach/pop band Chairmen of the Board takes the main stage from 8 to 9:30 p.m. Friday (Aug. 31).

Sept. 1 – Saturday – entertainment on the main stage, from noon to 9:15 p.m., includes the Austin Mowery Band, BPL Band, Atlantic Groove, Soul Function band and The Fantastic Shakers.

The official S.C. Barbecue Championship and Kansas City Barbeque Society cook-off is 8-11 a.m.; from noon to 5 p.m., barbecue samples and other food is available if you have a $10 wristband.

Fireworks begin at 9:15 p.m.

On Sept. 2 (Sunday):

Entertainment on main stage: The Necessary Band, noon-1:15 p.m.; Too Far Gone, 1:45-3 p.m. and Mark Roberts Band, 3:30-5 p.m.

Noon-5 p.m. barbecue combo and dinner sales, including 12:30 p.m. wing competition; and Kids Zone playground open.

Noon-3 p.m., NASCAR’s Kyle Busch’s race car on site for photographs; noon -4 p.m. boat rides on the park’s lake by Island Adventure Watersports; 1 and 3 p.m. wakeboard demonstrations (30-minutes each), on the lake.

Broadway at the Beach

Aug. 2 through Sept. 2, the Broadway at the Beach entertainment/dining complex offers a parade of strolling musicians (6:30 p.m. daily), live outdoor DJs, a beach car show (3-6 p.m. Sept. 1), fireworks (10 p.m. Sept. 1) and other activities.

Water parks’ last splash

Two of the three Grand Strand water parks are wrapping up their 2012 season Labor Day weekend; one will be open for the next two weekends. Prices vary by site.

Family Kingdom Water Park, across from Family Kingdom Amusement Park, 300 S. Ocean Blvd., Myrtle Beach. Open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 2 (final day). Details: www.familykingdomfun.com.

Wild Water & Wheels, 910 U.S. Business S., Surfside Beach, S.C. Open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. through Sept. 3 (final day for water park ); rides open 1-5 p.m. Details: www.wild-water.com.

Myrtle Waves Water Park, at U.S. 17 Bypass and 10th Avenue North Extension, Myrtle Beach. Open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sept. 2-3 and Sept. 8-9. Details: www.myrtlewaves.com.

Roller derby

The Palmetto Street Rollergirls, the Grand Strand’s flat-track derby league, will have “Labor Pains Tournament” Sept. 2 against the Lowcountry High Rollers Bruisin’ Betties and Sumter Fly Girls. Doors open at 3 p.m., and the first bout starts at 4 p.m., at Dream Land Skating Arena, 4475 Privetts Road, north of Conway, S.C., east of U.S. 701. Admission: $10; $6 for children and seniors. Sculpture show at Brookgreen

The National Sculpture Society’s 79th Annual Awards Exhibit – 43 juried works – will remain on display through Oct. 28 at Brookgreen Gardens, on U.S. 17 between Murrells Inlet and Litchfield Beach, S.C., across from Huntington Beach State Park. Hours: 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. The exhibition is free with regular Brookgreen admission: $14; $12 for 65 and older; $7 for ages 4-12; 3 and younger, free. Details: www.brookgreen.org.
