Steve Doolittle and Chris Vasoff, co-owners of the Mooresville-based Cool Breeze Cyclery, say they got into the cycling industry six years ago not only to promote cycling, but also to motivate people to get off the couch and lead a more active, healthy lifestyle. With that ambitious goal in mind, the two friends and business partners launched the Cool Breeze Corporate Challenge, in which they partner with local corporations and host multisport events.

Now in its fourth year, the 2012 challenge is a three-part series that culminates Sept. 9 in a triathlon sponsored by Ingersoll Rand in Davidson. The triathlon will feature a 500-yard swim in Davidson Lake, a 12-mile bike ride through the streets of Davidson and a 5k run on the enclosed campus of Ingersoll Rand. The USA Triathlon-sanctioned event is open to the public, and participants have a chance to gain ranking points for national triathlons. Proceeds from the triathlon benefit the Ada Jenkins Center in Davidson.

“We want to make it something that is welcoming to anybody of any ability,” says Doolittle. “We’ve designed the events so they’re not intimidating.”

Cool Breeze partnered with two other corporations this year, Newell Rubbermaid in Huntersville and Mooresville-based Lowe’s, and together sponsored multisport competitions that benefited Girls on the Run, the American Red Cross and several other charities.

Overseeing the competitions is Cool Breeze Cyclery’s corporate wellness coordinator, Leigh-Ann Mueller, who says that the annual events have been a big success, including the inaugural run in 2009. “It was just kind of an experiment to see if we could get people to do this,” she says. “Our hope was for 30 people, and we ended up with 150.”

In addition to the annual competitions, the Cool Breeze Corporate Challenge is also designed to serve as a company’s wellness program and bolster employees’ health, confidence and camaraderie, not to mention lower health care costs.

“The community begins to change when it adapts to a healthier lifestyle,” says Vasoff. “The more we can create cyclists the more the community pushes for sustainable improvements.”
