A man running from officers after a Concord bank robbery Friday fled to a nearby home and fatally shot himself, according to police.
Around 5:15 p.m. Friday, Concord police were called to the BB&T bank on Harris Road near Poplar Tent Road, about four miles northwest of Concord Regional Airport.
Witnesses told police that a man came into the bank and then showed a handgun and demanded money. He fled the bank on foot, police said.
Responding officers tracked the suspect through a nearby wooded area, and at some point, officers encountered the man. Police said he continued to flee, eventually running into the garage of a home on Northwest Lolabridge Street, about a half-mile away from the bank.
There, police said, the man turned the gun on himself.
Police have not yet publicly identified the man. It’s unclear whether he had any connection to the home on Northwest Lolabridge Street.
Officers did not fire any gunshots during the incident, police said, and no one else was injured.
“No further information is expected to be released until the suspect is identified and proper notifications can be made,” police said in a statement Friday night.
