Carolina Panthers add familiar names to practice roster

The Panthers filled their practice squad Saturday almost entirely with players they waived a day earlier.

The Panthers used seven of the eight spots on players who were in training camp, including an undrafted receiver with a Hall of Fame pedigree and an offensive lineman they drafted last year.

Jared Green, son of Hall of Fame cornerback Darrell Green, and guard Zack Williams, a sixth-round pick in 2011, were among those who cleared waivers and remained with the Panthers.

The others were all undrafted players:

• Tight end Nelson Rosario and defensive tackle Nate Chandler, who were teammates at UCLA.

• Guard Bryant Browning, who played in one game with the Panthers last year after spending most of the season on the practice squad.

• Running back Armond Smith and receiver Lamont Bryant, both of whom had strong showings in the final exhibition at Pittsburgh.

The Panthers will fill the final spot Sunday with second-year cornerback Ron Parker, according to league sources. Parker, waived by Seattle last week in the first round of cuts, spent time on the active rosters of the Seahawks and Oakland last season.

Parker played for Newberry in South Carolina, and led the South Atlantic Conference in interceptions (five) and fumble recoveries (three) in 2010, while making 59 tackles.

Poole Update: Undrafted running back Tauren Poole, who was waived/injured Friday, cleared waivers and returned to the Panthers on injured reserve. The Panthers have three options with the former Tennessee back:

They can wait for his sore ribs to get better and waive him when he’s healthy. They can reach an injury settlement with him and release him. Or keep him on injured reserve all season, and retain his rights.

The Panthers have two other players on IR in the same situation: cornerback Nate Ness and offensive lineman Lee Ziemba.

Back to practice: After getting two days off, the Panthers return to the practice fields Sunday to begin preparations for Tampa Bay. The Panthers are scheduled to be off Labor Day, and practice again Tuesday before heading to Florida.

With the DNC in town and President Obama delivering his acceptance speech at Bank of America Stadium on Thursday, the Panthers are leaving town and practicing at IMG Academies in Bradenton prior to their game against the Buccaneers.
