Tracy Curtis: Do you ‘like’ my new ideas for Facebook?

Tracy Curtis
Tracy Curtis is a mom after a 15-year career in TV and film. She lives in Charlotte.

I can’t decide how I feel about Facebook. But one thing I do like about it is if you don’t like a friend’s comment, you can report it as abusive. Not only that, but you can tell Mark Zuckerberg how you feel about it.

How it works is, when you delete the comment it asks you, “Is this comment about you or a friend?” And if you say yes, you check one of these boxes:

• I don’t like this comment.

• It’s harassing me.

• It’s harassing a friend.

I love this. Where else can you tell somebody how you feel about something that was said to you? Facebook should capitalize on this. But give us more choices.

• I don’t like this comment.

• It reminds me that I’m only going to hear from this person on my birthday.

• It reminds me that all the people who “like” my birthday never call me anymore.

• Which makes me feel like nobody cares about me, except for on my birthday.

• I don’t like that I don’t have plans for my birthday.

• Considering 14 people wished me a happy birthday and 26 “liked” my birthday, I should have something awesome to do.

• I don’t like birthdays.

Or:

• I don’t like this comment.

• It’s harassing me, because I haven’t “been up to” anything.

• And it’s not because I’m lazy or anything, but I’ve got kids so there’s not a lot to report other than kids stuff.

• And I could report a LOT of kid stuff.

• But this is basically asking what am I doing with my life and the answer is nothing at the moment.

• It’s harassing me, because I’m not doing anything and they know it.

And now there’s a Facebook app. So it’s mobile. And I don’t even read my comments anymore, I just file abuse reports about everything:

• I don’t like this question.

• It’s harassing me because Starbucks shouldn’t ask if I want “room for cream.”

• Because it’s saying you can have some of our cream, but we’re going to withhold some of our coffee.

• It makes me feel fat.

But, come to think of it, once you make the report, you never get any confirmation that they got it, or read it, or care about it. But, it doesn’t really matter. It feels good to have the option to vent to somebody. And just feel like Mark is listening.
