Rowan man held on gun theft charges

SALISBURY -- Rowan County authorities are holding an 18-year-old on charges connected to an alleged gun theft earlier this week.

The sheriff’s office says Richard Wright III, of Rowan County, was arrested Tuesday morning while walking down Old U.S. 70, near Barber Junction Road. He is being held in a Rowan County jail under $50,000 bond.

Investigators say a homeowner in the 500 block of Barber Junction Road, about a quarter-mile from Old U.S. 70, called authorities about 11 a.m. Tuesday and reported someone had broken into his home and taken four guns, a crossbow, and ammunition. That is in northwest Rowan County, about 2 miles east of the town of Cleveland.

Deputies say Wright was carrying a large bag when they found him. The bag contained a shotgun, which deputies say was identified by the homeowner as one of the guns taken in the burglary. Deputies say they went to Wright’s home and found two other guns and ammunition that had been taken.

Wright was charged with felony breaking and entering; three counts of felony larceny of a firearm; and felony possession of a firearm by a felon.
