MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Police are investigating a possible near drowning after a woman reportedly tried to baptize a 2-year-old child late Thursday.

Myrtle Beach police said the incident happened at a home on White Street around 11:20 p.m.

Micherald Bellamy, 39, of Myrtle Beach, is being held at the Myrtle Beach Jail on a charge of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, according to jail records. Bond has not been set.

Police were called about the incident by the woman’s mother who lives nearby on Grey Street, according to Sgt. Keith Goode of Myrtle Beach Police.

Goode said the child’s mother apparently tried to baptize the boy at her home on White Street, then took him to her mother’s house a block away on Grey Street.

Goode said the child did not appear to suffer life threatening injuries. The child was taken to a hospital by ambulance.

Bellamy was arrested at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, according to an arrest report. The child was kept overnight at the hospital for observation.

The incident is being investigated.
