Sewage spill near Lake Norman cove

Lincoln County authorities have banned swimming at a cove along Lake Norman following a sewage spill Friday.

The ban involves an unnamed cove near the King’s Cove subdivision, off Waterford Drive. The Lincoln County Health Department says it is advising swimmers and boaters to avoid the area because of possible fecal coliform problems.

The spill happened when a contractor’s truck struck a pressurized sewer line in the 8100 block of Waterford Drive. About 200 gallons of untreated sewage spilled into the lake nearby.

Lincoln County officials say they stopped the sewage flow soon afterward. No-swimming signs were posted in the area Friday afternoon, and they will remain there until tests show that fecal coliform counts have dropped to safe levels.
