Police in Morrisville are investigating an incident involving five high school football players from Maryland who are believed to have engaged in sexual activities with prostitutes at a hotel near Raleigh-Durham International Airport.
“Police opened an investigation of the incident at Holiday Inn on Thursday,” according to Stephanie Smith, a spokeswoman for the Morrisville Police Department. The police were notified of the incident by the school, she said.
The five players, who are minors, were students at DeMatha Catholic High School just outside Washington, D.C., in Hyattsville, Md. The incident took place at the Holiday Inn on Airport Boulevard in Morrisville.
The Washington Post reported that the students were removed from the team. One parent of a player who was dismissed told the paper that players hired prostitutes from a call service and engaged in sexual activities with those prostitutes in a hotel room.
In a statement, DeMatha Catholic High principal Daniel McMahon said,
“As on all field trips, we conducted room checks and monitored hallways. The last bed checks were at 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning and the hallways were monitored until after 4:30 a.m.”
He said the incident occurred at 5 a.m. Saturday. The school learned of it on Tuesday afternoon and began an investigation. McMahon said the students and their families were notified that they would face disciplinary procedures, but he refused to say whether the students were suspended.
“The school community is saddened and hurt by the actions of these few who do not reflect the character of the community,” he said.
There were 18 coaches and 65 players on the trip. The police department has not released any further information regarding surveillance cameras or whether they have executed a search warrant of the hotel to obtain evidence.
The football team won the game at Hillside 52-14. The game was the first of the season.
