Q&A: Carolina Panthers wide receiver Louis Murphy

We ask 10 questions of Panthers WR Louis Murphy, the former Oakland Raiders wideout who grew up in St. Petersburg, Fla., and played with Cam Newton for two seasons at Florida.

Q: This is like a home game for you this week, right? Did you get a chance to see your family?

Yeah. I got a chance to see my family. First time (playing) at home since I’ve been in the NFL. It’s going to be a great experience.

Q: How many tickets did you have to get?

I got a couple (laughs). I had to get a couple. It’s part of it. I’m just excited to see my family and play in front of the home crowd.

Q: Did you get to take any teammates anywhere this week or recommend any restaurants?

Most of the time I just spent time with family. My grandmother’s 77th birthday was (this week). The whole family’s coming down, so I’ll get a chance to see her.

Q: Was there a restaurant you had to get to this week?

There’s a couple. Most of them are over in St. Petersburg that I know of. I’ve been kind of far removed. There’s one restaurant on St. Pete Beach. I can’t think of the name of it right now.

Q: I take it they’re known for seafood?

Seafood, man. I’m a seafood eater. Get some fresh grouper when it’s in season, fresh oysters. I’m a seafood guy.

Q: You struggled with injuries and other things last year in Oakland. How nice is it to be getting a new start?

It’s great. I started my first two years and got hurt last year. I was looking forward to my third year, too, being a real breakout year. This year I feel good, great chemistry with my teammates and coaches. I feel excited.

Q: Are you expecting to catch a lot of passes from that No. 3 receiver spot?

With the way this offense goes, anybody can make a play at any given time. So I’m just ready when my number’s called.

Q: How cool is to be playing with Cam again?

It’s great, man. Enthusiastic, all about ball, just a real football player and just excited to be back with him again. He can sling it around. I’m just excited to be on the other end of those passes.

Q: People have mentioned the so-called sophomore slump in relation to Cam. Do you think he’ll avoid it?

Yeah. He puts in a lot of hard work. I don’t see him falling off any time soon.

Q: You left a Raiders’ team that went 8-8 the past two seasons. Do you think you’re joining a team that’s got a legitimate playoff shot?

Yeah, definitely. Especially with the leaders on our team and coach Rivera, I think we have a very good chance of making it.
