Balcony collapses, injuring one person

A deck at a University City apartment collapsed early Sunday, sending five people plummeting 12 feet and injuring one.

The injured person hurt his ankle, but is expected to be OK, said the owner, Joe Pries, who has owned the apartment in the Colville Condominiums complex for two months.

The townhome community is off Old Concord and Suther roads, not far from the UNC Charlotte campus. The incident happened about 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

A spokeswoman for UNC Charlotte says school records indicate none of those involved in the incident are currently enrolled there.

Pries said he’s hired inspectors to check out the decks at eight other units with similar decks. He’s also contacted the people who live in those units and told them not to use the decks until they are inspected.

“We’ve never had a problem ever,” Pries said. “This thing separated from the siding. It cut straight from the building. I said to myself, what could I have done differently? Now, I’ve been taking a corrective course of action.”
