Random thoughts, questions on golf's mysteries, etc.

By Ron Green Sr.

Pondering the mysteries of golf and other stuff:

• What ever happened to Anthony Kim, the whiz kid who once had 11 birdies in one round at Augusta National?

• Why is a right-hand breaking putt harder than a left-hand breaker?

• Could the FedEx Cup have shaped up better for the Tour Championship finale? All those stars at or near the top, Tiger and Rory going head to head. It took awhile but I'm on the bandwagon now.

• Is David Feherty the funniest man in sports? If you don't think so, read one of his books.

• Those people who stand over putts so long you figure rigor mortis has set in, what are they thinking about? World affairs? That looker in the cafeteria last night? What's for dinner?

• Men's member-guest tournaments are coming up, with their luncheons and dinners and parties. Isn't it time again for someone, feeling like Fred Astaire after imbibing a few, to fall into the band while twinkling his toes?

• Mac O'Grady, pro golfer, philosopher, guru, master of the lofty pronouncement, said, "When I putt, my emotions collide like tectonic plates. It's left my memory full of scars that won't heal." Think maybe I could have the same problem? Sure feels like it.

• Does anybody still carry a one iron for anything besides fending off critters?

• What's the hardest shot in golf? The obvious answer is the shot after you just shanked one but how about a long greenside sand shot with water on the other side of the green? If you are not proficient with the sand wedge, be prepared to yell the following instruction to your ball as it flies too far: "Swim!"

• Are people so desperate for attention that they yell "Fore" as they drive by golf courses? It's called a drive-by shouting. Clever, huh?

• Somebody named Jeff Cesario asks, "Who watches golf on TV? Who calls eight friends over and gets a keg of beer? Landscapers, I guess. They sit around the TV, yelling, 'Will you look at that golf path? Pure pea gravel.'" Funny.

• I just bought a pair of black golf shoes so I'm not qualified to judge but why do the new style shoes feature white soles? Where I hit the golf ball, those soles wouldn't stay white for long.

• OK, who wins the Tour Championship next week? I'm going out on a limb and picking Rory or Tiger. Shuddup!
