Nearly five dozen Mecklenburg County students and about 100 from the Charlotte area were named Wednesday as semifinalists in the annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

They are among about 16,000 high school seniors across the country selected to advance in the 58th annual scholarship competition, vying for about 8,300 National Merit scholarships worth more than $32 million. Scholarship winners will be named next spring.

Semifinalists are students who scored the highest as juniors in the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. To advance in the competition, students will be judged on academics, community and school involvement, and leadership qualities.

Myers Park High and Charlotte Latin School had the most semifinalists in the Charlotte region, with nine apiece. Charlotte’s Providence High had seven; five were named from Ardrey Kell High. Charlotte Country Day, Charlotte Catholic, Providence Day and Marvin Ridge High in Union County had four semifinalists each.
