It’s been a bad morning for commuters on Interstates 77 and 85, with major slowdowns in southern Mecklenburg County and near Gastonia.
The I-77 incident started with a vehicle fire shortly before 7 a.m. on the northbound side, near Tyvola Road. The vehicle has been cleared, but the damage was done to traffic.
On I-85, there was a multi-vehicle wreck on the northbound side near the Cox Road interchange.
Here is the traffic update at 8:30 a.m.:
-- I-77 northbound, south Charlotte ... Traffic is slow, averaging 20 mph, from near Carowinds up to Tyvola Road. This is the result of the vehicle fire earlier this morning.
-- South Tryon Street ... Two separate collisions are slowing traffic. One is at Westinghouse Boulevard and the other near Shopton Road. Traffic is slow on the inbound side.
-- I-85 northbound, Gastonia ... A five-vehicle wreck was reported about 7:20 a.m. near mile marker 21 (Cox Road). The wreck has been cleared, but traffic remains slow (20 to 25 mph).
-- East Independence Boulevard, inbound ... A collision was reported near Idlewild Road, and it’s slowing traffic on both Independence and Idlewild. But delays are only minor to moderate at 8:30 a.m.
-- I-77 southbound, Lake Norman ... Typical congestion delays are slowing traffic to 15 mph, from Davidson down to Cornelius.
-- I-485 inner loop, south Mecklenburg ... Congestion delays are the culprit, but traffic also is slowed by the situation on I-77. Average speeds are 15 mph from Providence Road to I-77.
-- Providence Road, inbound ... Congestion delays are slowing traffic to 15 to 20 mph, from Alexander Road in to Wendover Road.
