Top colleges -- a broader look

U.S. News & World’s annual college rankings are out, once again giving students and parents one way of measuring the nation’s colleges and universities.

The rankings include several main categories -- Top National University, Top National Liberal Arts College, Top Regional University and Top Regional Liberal Arts College -- but also includes dozens of other categories. Those cover areas such as Best Value, Best Up-And-Coming Schools, plus rankings of some individual disciplines.

A story published online Wednesday by The Observer contained lists from some of those categories, but not all.

For example, the story did not include Best Value Schools at the regional level, where Wingate is sixth in the South in the Regional University category. Also not included was the Top Regional Public University rankings, where The Citadel, Appalachian State University, College of Charleston, UNC Wilmington and Winthrop each made the top 10.
