A 59-year-old man was convicted this week of trafficking heroin at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
Sunny John Chukwu was taken into custody at the airport in February 2009 by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers.
Mecklenburg County prosecutors said Chukwu had 295 grams of heroin in his pants. That’s equivalent to more than half a pound.
On Tuesday, a jury convicted him of trafficking in heroin by possession, trafficking in heroin by transportation and possession of heroin with the intent to sell or deliver.
A judge sentenced Chukwu to about 18-23 years in prison.
