1 person taken to hospital after I-485 wreck

One person was taken to the hospital with what were described as life-threatening injuries after a wreck Wednesday on Interstate 485 in southern Mecklenburg.

The N.C. Highway Patrol said the wreck was reported around 1:40 p.m. on the inner loop of I-485 near mile marker 54. That’s between the Providence Road exit.

A Charlotte fire spokesman said it took firefighters 20 minutes to rescue someone who had been trapped inside of a vehicle. The person was taken to Carolinas Medical Center for treatment, according to MEDIC.

Few additional details were immediately available about the wreck, including how many vehicles were involved. The Highway Patrol said its troopers were still on the scene.

Congestion was still being reported in the area just before 3 p.m. Wednesday. The website of the N.C. Department of Transportation showed traffic was moving at an average speed of 10 miles per hour between exits 51 and 57.
