Facing Manning, Part I
Which Manning brother would you want quarterbacking your team right now? A day after Eli threw for 510 yards and brought the Giants back against Tampa Bay with 25 fourth-quarter points, Peyton – who comes to Charlotte in Week 10 with Denver – tossed three interceptions in the first quarter of a Monday night loss at Atlanta. The Panthers defended Eli well two years ago in New York, intercepting him three times and keeping him under 300 yards in the Giants’ 31-18 win.
Slowing the rush
The Giants have one of the league’s deepest defensive fronts, and will come at Cam Newton in waves. But the Panthers have a neutralizer with their zone read package, which could put the Giants on their heels if Newton makes good reads early. The Panthers could be without two offensive starters – right tackle Byron Bell and running back Jonathan Stewart, who had a 200-yard rushing game versus the Giants in 2009.
This is the Panthers’ first prime-time game in Charlotte since 2009, and their only one at home this season. Beating New Orleans last weekend was a good step for a team with playoff aspirations, but taking down the defending Super Bowl champs would be huge. While the Panthers have a couple of key players questionable, the Giants have a big one out. Starting wideout and former Independence High standout Hakeem Nicks will sit with a foot injury.
