Lauri, 40, and Kevin, 45, met through an online dating site in 2006. Both had been married previously and were hesitant to start a new relationship. Over the next two years they realized they’d found their best friend in each other and married Dec. 31, 2008. The couple lives in South Charlotte and Lauri tells their story.
First date: We first met at Hickory Tavern in June 2006 and Kevin arrived first. I called his cell phone and our eyes met at the same time he answered. Though we didn’t tell each other at the time, we both went home after dinner and drinks and cancelled the other dates we had lined up.
A good fit: Everything with Kevin was so easy. We got along really well, we both love golf, we make each other laugh. Our morals and values seemed to align and we were both at the same place in our lives in that we’d both been hurt, but were ready to commit again. I knew I didn’t want to be with anyone but Kevin after about a month.
Empty box: By 2008 we’d discussed marriage, but I didn’t know how or when Kevin would propose. We had just bought our house and as we were getting his townhome ready to sell, Kevin came downstairs with a ring box obviously bulging in his pocket. I immediately went after the box and was shocked when it was empty. Kevin knew how I’d react and was hiding the ring behind his back.
A perfect match: After our small New Years Eve wedding we had a party and reception in our new house. The first night we were married both our parents were upstairs asleep, but it represented how important family is to us. We have two “fur-babies,” our Dachshund rescues, Henry and Murphy.
