Iredell woman charged with credit card theft

MOORESVILLE -- An Iredell County woman is charged with stealing a roommate’s credit card, running up thousands of dollars’ in charges, and then telling the credit card company not to notify the card’s real owner of its use.

The sheriff’s office says Janice Payne, 57, of Mooresville, is charged with financial transaction card theft and two counts of financial transaction card fraud. She was arrested Tuesday, the sheriff’s office says.

Detectives say a woman told them Payne had lived with her for a few months before moving out. The victim accused Payne of stealing her Discover card and running up charges of $9,389.88.

Investigators also say Payne contacted Discover card services and asked them to disable a service that automatically alerts card-holders when the card is being used.
