CHAPEL HILL North Carolina coach Roy Williams has been released from UNC Hospitals, one day after he underwent a three-and-a-half hour operation to remove a tumor from his right kidney.
UNC announced Williams release in a statement on Thursday afternoon.
Williams, 62, underwent a robotic partial nephrectomy to remove the tumor. Steve Kirschner, a UNC athletic department spokesman, said doctors didnt yet know whether the tumor was malignant or benign. It could take doctors a week or more to determine that, Kirschner said.
Williams might need a second surgery next month, but he is expected not to miss any time once the Tar Heels begin the season in mid-November.
I fully expect him to coach this season and for years to come, said Dr. Eric Wallen, who led the team of surgeons that performed Williams surgery. He could miss some practice time if we perform another procedure sometime in October, but he would be able to resume his coaching duties prior to the start of the regular season.
