A 51-year-old pedestrian who was struck by a car Friday in southwest Charlotte has died, police said.

Melvin Givens was walking just before 8 p.m. Friday across Steele Creek Road, near the intersection with Branch Bend Lane, when he was hit by a 2007 Kia Optima, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

Paramedics took Givens to Carolinas Medical Center. He died Saturday morning as a result of his injuries, police said.

The Kia’s driver, a 70-year-old man, and three teenage boys who were in the car were not injured.

Police said the crash is still under investigation, but a preliminary investigation shows speed and alcohol were not factors. Police said Saturday that no charges had been filed.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Detective R.C. Gormican at 704-432-2169.
