Plaza fire displaces 9 families

Nine families were left looking for shelter Sunday morning after a two-alarm fire damaged their apartment building in the Plaza Midwood area.

The fire was reported shortly before 7 a.m. at the Riviera Apartments, in the 1800 block of The Plaza, about halfway between Central and Parkwood avenues.

Firefighters reported finding heavy smoke and flames coming from two apartments when they arrived at the two-story building. Charlotte fire Capt. Mark Basnight said it took a crew of 44 firefighters a little more than a half-hour to subdue the flames.

Firefighters and neighbors pounded on doors to alert residents. There were no injuries, although NewsChannel 36, the Observer’s news partner, reports that two pet cats died in the fire.

There is no word as to a cause. The American Red Cross chapter in Charlotte was providing help for the victims.
