Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said a 25-year-old man died in a shooting late Saturday that was connected to a drug deal.
Courtenay Terrill Robinson was shot to death after he and a group of people met another group at a convenience store and conducted a drug deal, police said. Police did not give Robinsons address.
Police were called to the 8600 block of Lawyers Road, just outside of Mint Hill, at 10:09 p.m. after receiving a report of a shooting in the street there.
When officers arrived, they found Robinson lying on the road, police said. Mint Hill paramedics pronounced him dead just before 10:30 p.m.
Karen James, who lives nearby, said she was watching football in her home when she heard gunshots.
It got crazy out there. Blue lights were everywhere, she said.
Police said Robinson had been an occupant of a vehicle that remained at the scene. But other occupants of the vehicle fled on foot, police said. Another vehicle involved also escaped.
Police spokesman Bob Fey said everyone involved in the incident had been identified and located, but no one had been charged in the case by Sunday evening.
Chris James, 24, said he checked out the crime scene shortly after the shooting.
One man walked over the police line and started saying Thats my brother. Thats my brother, said Chris James.
A police helicopter and search dogs came to the area as investigators collected evidence. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Departments Gang Unit helped in the investigation, police said.
Detectives were interviewing witnesses late Saturday, and several police vehicles remained near the scene through Sunday morning.
This kind of thing just doesnt happen here, said Karen James. Its kind of disturbing when your quiet town becomes a crime scene like that.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call detectives at 704-432-TIPS or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
