Elevation Church training mentors for area students

Elevation Church has launched a congregation-wide program to put 1,000 mentors in Charlotte-area schools.

The church’s “M1 Initiative” is under way, with more than 1,600 volunteers being trained to takepart. The goal: 1,000 mentors for area students for one year.

“We have always said we want to be a blessing to our city and support our leaders with a volunteer force they can count on,” Elevation Pastor Steven Furtick said in a prepared statement.

The church is partnering with 14 nonprofits to train and connect the mentors with students in Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools, along with Gaston, Union and York counties.

Elevation, one of the fastest-growing churches in the country, has a presence in all four counties.

“It’s not bragging if you’re doing it,” said CMS Superintendent Heath Morrison. “Thank you, Elevation, for stepping up to meet the needs of students in our city.”
