Wrecks cleared, but I-77, I-85 still slow

Wrecks that caused major problems earlier Wednesday morning on Interstates 77 and 85 have been cleared. But traffic remains slow on those two highways at 8:25 a.m.

Crews have cleared a wreck that originally closed two lanes on southbound I-77 near Nations Ford Road, and the same has happened with a three-vehicle collision on northbound I-85 near Mallard Creek Church Road.

But in both cases, the long backups that existed around 8 a.m. have been slow to clear. The I-85 backlog should be cleared within another 10 minutes, however.

Here is a look at problems at 8:25 a.m.:

-- I-77 southbound, south Charlotte ... Traffic is moving again, but average speeds are only 25 mph. That should improve after 8:30 a.m.

-- I-77 northbound, south Charlotte ... Congestion and earlier slowdowns caused by onlookers near the southbound wreck have slowed traffic to 15 or 20 mph from Carowinds north to Tyvola Road.

-- I-85 northbound, northeast Charlotte ... The wreck near Mallard Creek Church Road is cleared, and traffic flow is improving. At one point, backups stretched 5 to 6 miles.

-- I-485 inner loop, south Mecklenburg ... Congestion slowing traffic to 15 mph from Providence Road to South Boulevard.

-- I-77 southbound, near Lake Norman ... Congestion slowing traffic to 20 mph.

-- Albemarle Road inbound ... Congestion slowing traffic to 15 or 20 mph from Lawyers Road to Sharon Amity Road.

-- Independence Boulevard inbound ... Congestion slowing traffic to 10 mph from Margaret Wallace Road to Idlewild Road.
