Construction work is expected to temporarily close the bridge from west Independence Boulevard to the John Belk Freeway near uptown this weekend.
Barring bad weather, the closure is currently set to run from 9 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Monday, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation. Traffic will be detoured to the Brookshire and Davidson Street, officials said.
Construction crews are replacing the concrete on the bridge deck, and the work is expected to be finished by Dec. 20. State transportation officials said the close will need to be closed again at some point in the next few months, but a date has not yet been announced. Lane closures will also occur on the highway at times in the coming months.
