A 36-year-old Caldwell County woman was arrested Thursday morning by Hickory police and charged in connection with a fatal wreck 5 1/2 months ago.
Police say April Cheri Childers, of Granite Falls, was charged with DWI, aggravated serious injury by motor vehicle, and possession of a controlled substance. She was arrested without incident and jailed under $65,000 bond, police say.
Childers was charged in the April 13 head-on collision that killed a 32-year-old Hickory man, Ashley Shane Britt.
According to police, Childers was driving northbound on 8th Avenue Drive S.E. about 3:15 p.m. that day, when her 1996 Toyota Camry crossed the center line. It slammed into a southbound 1987 Chevrolet Camaro driven by Britt.
Childers and a passenger in her car were seriously injured but recovered.
Childers has a date Friday in Superior Court on the aggravated serious injury and drug charges, and she will appear in District Court on Oct. 18 for the DWI charges. Police said they waited until they had final toxicology reports before pressing charges against Childers.
