The winner: What do I do with leftover pieces of laminate flooring from my last home improvement project? I had an old desk in my living room in bad need of a makeover. The surface was ugly but the desk is sturdy and well-built, so I placed three or four pieces of laminate (tongue and groove kind) on the desk. It magically transformed the piece into something grand. I did the same thing with the built-in desk in our kitchen, and you will too once you see how easy this is! Heather Walton, Charlotte
Witch hazel clears the air
I keep a spray bottle of witch hazel as an inexpensive air freshener. A spritz defeats fried fish, dog smell, even cigarette smoke without belaboring the air with perfume odor. Mary Ellen Snodgrass, Hickory
Simple move protects purse
Many of us casually throw our purses onto the passenger seat of the car while traveling. In warmer weather, we drive with our car doors locked but with our windows down. Put your seatbelt through your purse strap before clicking and your purse cannot be snatched out of an open window when stopped at a red light. Nancy Quiring, Matthews
