Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have arrested a Georgia man in connection with the fatal shooting of a 25-year-old Charlotte man early Thursday morning in west Charlotte.

Police say Connell Montigo Muskelly, 26, of Augusta, was arrested about 10:30 a.m. in the 3100 block of Boyd Street, off Rozzelles Ferry Road in west Charlotte. He was taken into custody about 2 miles from where Johnny Peay was fatally shot about 4:15 a.m.

Muskelly has been charged with murder, according to CMPD.

Officers were called early Thursday to the 1800 block of Garibaldi Street, off Camp Greene Street, in response to a shooting. They found Peay suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed by Medic to Carolinas Medical Center but died about 45 minutes later.

Detectives at the scene said it appeared as if Peay was shot in the back. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police investigators say they think Peay and his assailant knew each other, and they don’t believe it was a case of random violence.

Detectives spent several hours after the shooting, going door to door in hopes of finding witnesses.

Criminal records show Muskelly was arrested Aug. 26 and charged in Augusta with possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a weapon of mass destruction-gun (usually used for shotgun possession). Muskelly has been charged several other times in recent years.

Police say the investigation is continuing and ask that anyone with information in the case call detectives at 704-432-TIPS, or leave tips with Crime Stoppers, 704-334-1600.
