Car hits trees, Rowan driver killed

SALISBURY -- Authorities say they suspect a Rowan County driver who died in an early-morning crash Friday had fallen asleep at the wheel.

The crash happened on Union Church Road at Stokes Ferry Road, east of Salisbury. The victim was identified by the N.C. Highway Patrol as Jeffrey Swicegood, 33, who lived not far from the crash scene.

A passing ambulance spotted the car in a grove of trees. Troopers say the driver was killed when the car slammed into a tree.

Relatives told authorities that Swicegood got off work around midnight, and troopers theorize he might have crashed after falling asleep. He was not wearing a seat belt, troopers say.
