Southminster hospice house to open in December

The second freestanding hospice house in Charlotte will open in December at Southminster, a retirement community in south Charlotte.

The new Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminster will have 10 beds and will be operated by Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region, which also operates Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville.

The Southminster project will be the first in the state to have a hospice unit housed within a retirement community, officials said. A $1.5 million capital campaign is currently underway to offset construction and renovation costs. Both the Huntersville and the Southminster centers are supported by the Leon Levine Foundation and The Dickson Foundation.

Founded in 1978, Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region serves 1,300 patients a day from eight counties (Mecklenburg, Lincoln, Gaston, Cleveland, Catawba, Cabarrus, Iredell and Union).
